The System

AS-Interface is the automation system for the Sensor/Actuator-Level. More than 16 million nodes are installed since its introduction in 1994. AS-Interface is applicable in all areas of modern automation such as Factory, Process, Building and Transportation.

AS-Interface was developed with the main characteristics of simplicity, cost-effectiveness and transparency. The term fieldbus is intentionally avoided, since AS-I is more literally an interface making use of information, electronics and electromechanics.

The result for the user is an entire new technology which represents the main cost advantage of the system. AS-Interface is an open system and can therefore be used universally. It can be connected either directly to a programmable controller (PLC) or to higher-order fieldbuses. Emphasis was placed on ensuring the corresponding components are manufacturer-independent yet can reliably communicate with each other.

Since 1999 AS-Interface has been standardized in EN 50295 and IEC 62026-2. The system undergoes continual development, today allowing double the number of slaves to be connected to a master. In addition, it is now possible to connect analog devices using special profiles.

In the meantime, a large number of manufacturers of AS-Interface products now offer products that assure interoperability with other products. And as "AS-i Safety at Work" the AS-Interface has also gained entrance into safety technology. In all these further developments, strict attention was paid to ensuring uniform "compatibility."
